"Updated version not better.... not even working after one use." 2010-07-01

We just bought this updated version Deni 5205 to replace our older model 5200, which we had for over 5 years. Used this new model once last night and after one use it stopped working. The motor gave out. Also this was much louder than our last model. Very disappointed.

  
"Wonderful soft-serve style ice cream" 2010-06-27

We've tried two different types of dessert in this ice cream maker. First we made a german chocolate ice cream with a recipe I got off of the allrecipes website. Soft serve is the best description and then it hardens up more in the freezer. Don't expect any ice cream to harden up more than soft serve. If you want hard scoop ice cream you will need to allow a couple of hours in the freezer for that. Very creamy with almost no ice crystals in it at all. We also made the espresso ice with the recipe from the instruction booklet that comes with the maker). It didn't freeze like you would think of an "ice". It was more of a slush. The machine locked up because of the ice that formed on the wall of the drum, which is what it is supposed to do to keep from breaking the paddle or burning up the motor. But, it left us scraping the ice off the sides and mixing it with the slush in the middle. It tasted fine, just wasn't an "ice". I would say if you are using this strictly for ice cream, it is a wonderful ice cream maker, but don't count on making other types of desserts. I love the top that it comes with so that you can just put the drum with the ice cream in it straight into the freezer to harden up. The design of the paddle mixes the ice cream up very well, one of the best I've seen. There are also lots of recipes that come with the instruction booklet, in case you are at a loss for what to make. I would also recommend Ben & Jerry's ice cream recipe book. Very good recipes.

I bought this ice-cream maker so I could enjoy some homemade sugar free ice-cream. I love how quickly and easily the machine works. You do have to freeze the finished product if you want it to be harder than soft serve. My daughters can even operate it to make their own which they love to do!!

"OK but not as good as my old Deni Scoop Factory" 2009-09-07

I bought the Deni ice cream maker with candy crusher (Model 5210) to replace my older Deni Ice Cream Factory machine. I've made ice cream now three times in this new one, and all three times the motor stops churning before the ice cream gets to the soft serve phase. It makes an uneven and inconsistent product that is more frozen to the sides of the cannister and bottom of the cannister, while the ice cream in the center is still very runny. The third time this happened, I took the cannister off the new machine and finished it off on my old one. The old one churned the ice cream to the perfect fluffy soft serve consistency, the new one is dense and runny, and freezes rock hard. I am disappointed the newer model isn't as good as my old one. The motor base is light weight, flimsy and all plasticized, while the older version (Model 5100) is a great little machine that is sturdy and solid. I expected more from the new model, thought it would be improved and even better. But sadly, it isn't. I would save my pennies and not purchase this one. At least the cannister and paddle fits my old one, now I have spare parts! The extra cannister will come in handy if I need a larger amount of ice cream. While this wooden ice cream maker looks old-fashioned, it's actually electric, taking the arm work out of the whole process. In just 20 to 40 minutes, the maker produces up to five quarts (approximately 40 servings) of ice cream, sorbet, or frozen yogurt. The high-torque motor shuts off automatically when freezing is complete. All that's required is rock salt, ice, and the desired mixture of any flavor (a recipe booklet is included). The Rival ice cream maker consists of the motor unit, a 10-by-11-1/2-inch wooden bucket, a metal ice cream can with plastic lid, a cork stopper for the hole in the lid, and a plastic dasher with a metal shaft. A latch system secures the motor unit to the bucket, and a 45-inch cord allows good reach to a power outlet.
To make good old vanilla ice cream, spiced cider sorbet, frozen strawberry yogurt, and many other tasty treats, the mixture is poured into the metal can, the dasher inserted, lid placed on, and motor unit engaged with the dasher shaft. The dasher does not turn during the freezing process; rather, the can turns around the dasher. Layers of ice and rock salt inside the wooden bucket around the can keep the temperature low enough to freeze the mixture. In case of leakage through the wooden bucket, it's a good idea to have newspaper or a plastic tub underneath. To harden ice cream, the dasher is removed after churning is complete, the cork stopper inserted into the lid, and ice and rock salt are packed over the entire can for a couple hours. It makes good ice cream but the motor is a little weak. We don't use it very often so I don't believe it should be warn out already...good buy for the price though.

I have to agree with a number of other reviewers here. The wooden bucket leaks. The only way I could make ice cream at all was to put the whole thing in my kitchen sink & fill the sink with water. That way the brine had nowhere to leak to. The paddle shaft/motor interface is terrible. It started to strip the first time I used it. Yes, I had aluminum shavings in the ice cream, too. With very careful assembly, I was able to use it 3 more times--then I grew frustrated & threw it out. Your money is better spent on a quality ice cream maker.

After roughly 10 bouts with this ice cream maker, I tossed it in the trash this past weekend. The primary issue is the poor quality of the plastics in the join between the motor and the lid on the canister. After the very first use, the plastic on both began to grind down creating poor contact. By the fourth use, it was essentially useless.

With six little kids standing, watching this machine with anticipation and the beater in the machine not turning because of a design flaw is disappointing to say the least. Never the less we tried it again with the same results. Oh well I've been fished in before!
