"Recommend this product" 2010-07-12
By Rachel Paxton (Pasco, WA USA)
I bought this ice cream maker at Target last year, and I haven't had any of the problems that other reviewers have noted. We have used it about 5 times so far, and have not had any problem with the motor. The ice cream is very soft when it is done (45 minutes or less), but that is normal, and if you let it sit in the freezer overnight it is perfect consistency the next day. There are a lot of intstructions to follow to get everything just right, but that is true for any ice cream maker. Once you get all the steps down, the ice cream is very easy to make. Definitely worth the effort!

"Completely unusable after the 4th batch" 2010-06-13
By Quentin H Spencer (Champaign, IL)
I see this has already received poor reviews, but mine has failed in a new way, so I figured I should add my complaints just in case anyone was still thinking about buying one of these. I bought this last summer and have made 3 successful batches of ice cream, although I found the other problems already mentioned in other reviews to be true to varying degrees. The motor didn't stop right away like it has for others, but when it eventually did, the ice cream was still very soft. The hand crank was more or less worthless because the internal gears are plastic and they slip when there is any significant resistance. On the 4th batch of ice cream, the aluminum bucket got a hole in the bottom, which caused the ice cream to get salt water mixed in it so it tasted terrible and never froze. The bucket is also starting to leak a good deal of water, although I could overlook that if not for the other problems. To summarize, I'd have been far better off buying $50 worth of very expensive ice cream.

"DONT BUY" 2010-04-23
By J.Smith
This was the WORST product Ive ever bought. I bought it for my husband and was so excited when it came that day. We bought all the stuff for it and got everything ready and turned on the electric motor and it quit within 5 minutes. I took it off and tried it again and it wouldnt work. I was very very upset.

"Save Your $$" 2010-01-06
By JPG
I purchased this icecream maker with the electric and hand crank options. While using it the second time with the electric motor it stripped out the gears. I contacted Aroma through their online customer service link and I still haven't heard back from them. Like other reviews the hand crank was very noisy so I sprayed it down with some WD40 and now it seems to be ok. If I had it to do all over again I would save my money and get a better quality icecream maker.

"Motor is too weak" 2009-05-12
By A. Barksdale
What a huge disappointment. I bought one of these at a local store last week and returned it. It looks good. The aluminum container is relatively heavy gauge. The motor is simply not up to the task and the manual crank is poor. The motor stopped but the ice cream was still liquid.

"Awesome product!!!!!!!" 2010-04-28
By A. Atangana
it's really simple to use. Compared to the traditional ice cream markers this one doesnt require ice and salt. It mixes the cream until it is stiff enough for freezing. The ice cream texture is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! very little air is blended in with the cream mixture. All in all there is just enough air that the machine allows for the smooth and creamy texture. It's truly worth the purchase. My kids and I love it!

"Spare Bowl for the busy summer ice cream season" 2010-07-19
By M. Reimer (Canada)
I ordered this spare bowl to keep as a back up, for the times that we forget to put the main bowl back in the freezer. We like to keep the bowl frozen for a least 24 hours. We have tried for 6-8 hours and found that it was not enough to make the ice cream thick. So now we have two bowls, and there will always be one ready in the freezer for when we need to make a batch last minute. Great product, same exact bowl as the stock bowl that comes with the ice cream maker.

"Where's the ice cream?" 2010-06-15
By J. Artful (Pasadena, CA, US)
This Cuisinart ice cream maker sounded too good to be true. Unfortunately, even though I followed the directions precisely, what I got was not ice cream...not even close. It never thickened. It tasted good (we drank it), but it was not what I wanted. I would like to know if I did something wrong, but as I said, I followed directions.

 "Yummy Ice Cream" 2010-06-08
By Deb (Hemet, CA)
I had ordered the Cuisinart Ice Cream maker and liked it so much I decided to order an extra container to make more ice cream at one time ;-)

"Where's the cover..." 2009-12-27
By CHRISTOPHER FRANK
Ice cream maker worked well but why are there no included covers for the ice cream bowls? Directions say to "transfer" ice cream to an airtight container but that seems like an extra unnecessary hassle.

"just keeps on" 2009-08-16

Very good product, works just as advertised. My ONLY gripe is that it gtakes so long to freeze the unit. LOL

"Perfect Gelato/Sortbet Maker" 2010-07-16
By Green House (San Francisco, CA USA)
This machine is simply awesome. Worth every penny. Love the $800.00 discount and ships directly from Italy. Cleanup is easy as you need a damp rag and wash and reuse the rag. Make sure that when making Gelato, to watch after 30+minutes, or listen until the rotating blade stops due to the frozen thickness of gelato. If storing gelato, I recommend you buy plastic containers good for about 1-2 quarts. Noise is very minimal but then again, we're somewhat of a loud family.

"Really good unit" 2010-05-05
By Grounded Flyer
Okay, it's expensive, but in 20-30 minutes you can make a really nice gelato or sorbet. It doesn't spin fast enough to be an ice cream maker, but this also means you get a richer, denser product. If you're like me, you'll appreciate not having so much of the volume being air.The bowl does not come out which makes cleanup a little difficult, and the dasher does not have a silicone edge. The upside is that you don't get tiny pieces of silicone in your product (what do you think is happening when it wears out?), but the downside is that you should use the spatula to scrape the bowl at least once before you finish with the automation.I've been using this unit for months though with fantastic result. Vanilla Grand Marnier Sorbet, Rum Raisin and Baily's Gelatos, all come out beautifully. I mention these in particular because I did not skimp on the alcohol, and it still froze just fine. If you can afford it, I highly recommend one.

"Heat transfer issues?" 2010-03-16
By Ice cream guy (Lake Tahoe)
This is a nice machine however I've had problems with it not getting cold enough. I don't know if I am low on freon (or whatever agent it uses) or if it is because I'm at 6500 feet. It has always been this way, so I suspect the later. At this altitude, the air is thinner and the heat transfer is less effective. In the summer the unit can take an hour or more to harden ice cream, often times not even freezing enough to stop the beater. In the winter, I put it outside to help the heat transfer and it takes 20-30 minutes for a batch. However, the more batches I try to make, the less efficient it becomes. Even in the winter, 2-3 batches is about the limit before you have to let it cool down for hours.I've tried to see if it can be "recharged" but haven't found any plumbing valves and have never come across anyone with maintenance expertise for this ice cream maker. There doesn't seem to be any real US point of contact for the company for support issues. If anyone else has found repair expertise for this unit - please post it for all of us!

"I LOVE THIS MACHINE!!!" 2010-02-04
By Jaclyn Carole Hill (New Orleans, LA)
I use this machine to churn out about 40 quarts a week and love it. I'm saving for the bigger model. I churn ice cream for 20 minutes and then freeze - great texture and flavor. Biggest secret is adding 1-3 tablespoons of alcohol to soften your ice cream. ; ) Only complaint is that the screw on the paddle sometimes gets stuck and is difficult to remove without some serious muscle. Otherwise its great! Hope this helps!

And Go Saints!!!

"very happy!" 2009-11-28
By G. Ludlum (Massachusetts)
we are using this in a restaurant, and got it to replace a home machine given to us. The home machine was getting really tired! This makes ice cream and sorbet with a good consistency. It is very quiet - which is a problem in our restaurant because we don't hear it when it finishes. But that is a problem we can live with, compared to the extreme noisiness of our previous machine.

Freezing Time and Bowl Preparation

The freezer bowl must be completely frozen before you begin your recipe. Before freezing, wash and dry the bowl. The length of time needed to reach the frozen state depends on how cold your freezer is. It is recommended that you place the freezer bowl in the back of your freezer where it is the coldest. Be sure to place the freezer bowl on a flat surface in its upright position for even freezing.
Generally, freezing time is between 16 hours and 24 hours. Shake the bowl to determine whether it is completely frozen. If you do not hear the liquid within the bowl moving, the cooling liquid is therefore frozen. For the most convenient frozen desserts and drinks, leave your freezer bowl in the freezer at all times. Use the bowl immediately after removing from the freezer. It will begin to quickly defrost once it has been removed for the freezer.
Reminder: Your freezer should be set to 0°F to ensure proper freezing of all foods.

Making Frozen Desserts or Drinks

  1. Use Cuisinart recipes included in the Instruction Booklet or use your own recipe, making sure it yields 1-1/2 quarts or less.
  2. Remove the freezer bowl from the freezer and place on the center of the base. The bowl will begin to defrost quickly once it has been removed from the freezer. Use it immediately after removing from freezer.
  3. Place mixing paddle in freezer bowl. It rests in the center of the bowl, with the circle side facing up.
  4. Place lid on the base and rotate clockwise until tabs on lid lock in place on base.
  5. Press On/Off switch to ON position. Freezer bowl will begin to turn.
  6. Immediately pour ingredients through ingredient spout. NOTE: Ingredients must be added to the freezer bowl after the unit is turned on.
  7. Frozen desserts or drinks will be done in less than 20 minutes. The time will depend on the recipe and volume of the dessert you are making. When the mixture has thickened to your liking, it is done. If you desire a firmer consistency, transfer the dessert to an airtight container and store in the freezer for two or more hours.
Adding Ingredients
Ingredients such as chips and nuts should be added about 5 minutes before the recipe is complete. Once the dessert has began to thicken, add the ingredients through the ingredient spout. Nuts and other ingredients should be no larger than a chocolate chip.

  • Large capacity makes up to 1 1/2 quarts
  • Double insulated freezer bowl eliminates the need for ice
  • Easy lock transparent lid with large spout makes adding ingredients simple and mess free

"Simply Great Ice Cream" 2010-07-18
By Kathryn Price
As this product had not been reviewed yet, I read several reviews for the Cuisinart ICE-20 Ice Cream Maker before making my decision to purchase this product. Many comments about the ICE-20 mentioned that the ice cream is the consistency of soft serve; some reviewers said it was too soft. I did not find that issue with the ice cream I made with this ice cream maker. I turned my freezer to the coldest setting and froze the bowl for 7 hours. I could not hear any liquid moving in the bowl at that point, so I assumed it was solidly frozen. I made the Simple Vanilla Ice Cream recipe from the booklet that came with the machine. After about 20 minutes, the ice cream was nicely textured and creamy. It wasn't as hard as the packed ice cream you purchase at the store, so I guess you might say the consistency was somewhere between soft serve and store-bought: firmer than soft serve, but not as firm as hard pack. As reviewers of the ICE-20 pointed out, if the ice cream was frozen as solidly as hard pack in the machine, it would be difficult to remove it from the container.

The ice cream is simply wonderful. It has a fresh, pure taste that outshines anything I could purchase from the store. I bought it mainly because I wanted to have control of my ingredients. I want to use organic products as much as possible and I want to experiment with soy ice creams; I have thought I might want to get away from dairy products altogether.

This product was listed as the newest version of the ICE-20 and as an upgrade that improves upon the ICE-20 while still keeping its popular features. I don't know what the upgrade consists of, but I can say that in 20-25 minutes, I had really excellent ice cream that I thought was the perfect consistency. After freezing it for a couple of hours it was firmer and I liked it at that consistency, too. I was thinking about how great this ice cream would be with warm apple pie, because tasting it really is like tasting fresh vanilla cream. But we're a couple of months away from apple pie season! This product couldn't be simpler to use, and I think it will pay for itself fairly quickly in savings over the cost of premium purchased ice cream. And it just tastes better.

White Mountain F64304-X 4-Quart Hand-Crank Ice Cream Freezer

Product By White Mountain(20 customers reviews)
Lowest Price : $132.25

Product Description

Many summers ago, ice-cream socials centered around families getting together, each cranking out its favorite ice cream for all to enjoy. You can still carry on that tradition with this authentic-looking Ice Cream Maker with Crank. The White Mountain Freezer company, which crafts these Makers, has been in business for over 145 years and knows all about making ice cream the good old-fashioned way. In fact, they've developed an exclusive method of mixing the ice cream ??? a triple-motion gear action that properly mixes and beats the entire cream contents of the canister, resulting in the smoothest, creamiest ice cream in just 20-30 minutes. The stainless-steel canister is designed for faster freezing, and the cast-iron dasher and blades will never warp out of shape. The freezer tub is made of New England pine that has been sealed, stained, lacquered and bound with strong galvanized hoops. For a century and a half, since a woman in New York invented the hand-crank freezer, making ice cream has been an American family value. Mom blended the ice cream mixture; Dad filled the maker's wooden tub with ice and rock salt to achieve the below-freezing temperature needed to produce smooth confections; kids clamored to turn the crank; and everyone happily consumed big bowls of ice cream as a reward. This family-bonding activity remains as vibrant today as it was through a century-and-a-half of "progress." With various ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sherbet recipes included, this old-fashioned White Mountain ice cream maker maintains the tradition. Only the use of modern stainless steel for the freezer can and dasher distinguishes this rugged maker from the one earlier generations enjoyed. And years from now it will still be used, knitting together a family's history.

Technical Details
  • Makes 4 quarts of ice cream, frozen yogurt, and other frozen confections
  • Hand cranking provides fun for the entire family
  • Stainless-steel freezer can and dasher inside wooden tub
  • Freezer can and dasher are dishwasher-safe

"As the world turns" 2010-06-24
By hardnails (Santa Barbara)
The thing works great. It is sturdy and the workmanship is good. It looks like an old timer with the wooden bucket. The gear ratio on the crank doesn't offer much mechanical advantage so make sure that you have a hearty soul to turn the crank for about 1/2 hour. It takes stamina to make it to the point that the crank will hardly turn. Also make sure you have the "ice cream maker salt", yup there's a large crystal salt out there made just for us ice cream crankers, and have 20# of ice on hand. We used every cube.I have lower back issues so I had it to do over I would by an electric model as I have to draft a cranker to make a batch.

"New Style White Mountain Freezer" 2010-03-26
By Norman C., Ribble (T or C, NM)
I love this new freezer. I own five other White Mountain. 4qt freezers but this new style is the best ever. The Wooden tub is approximately an inch larger in diameter and this extra space allows a greater quantity of ice to surround the canister. This proved to be very effective both when freezing and curing the cream. I'm so impressed that I will start replacing my older White Mountain Freezer with new ones as I can. Fortunately White Mountain Freezers carry an excellent resale value. They cost a little more, but the best always does because it's worth it.To the white Mountain Company: Excellent improvement on a winner of 125 years.

Thanks,

Norman Ribble

"Ice Cream=LOVE" 2008-08-05
By Kevin Buckner (Washington, DC)
For those of you with the problems of filings in your ice cream...take a thick piece of plastic (not saran wrap), cut it to about 2" larger than the diameter of the stainless freezer and after you've placed your ice cream mixture and the paddles in, push the middle of the plastic over the center piece and press down the lid. I did this just this past Sunday, my FAVORITE Mother-In-Law's birthday, and it came out perfect.Homemade ice cream is not like the commercial stuff, it has to be handled with care. YES, it melts quicker, YES, it is thin when it melts...this is because it doesn't have all that JUNK in it that the store bought crap does. So, after you crank until it's stiff and I mean STIFF...pack the bucket with fresh ice and salt and cover the top with towels and let it 'ripen' for about 30-45 min.. THEN, when you take it out of the container, place it into your freezer ASAP. Then serve, believe me, if you prepare your mixture right and put in the elbow grease...your children will love you forever. The recipe I use is a cooked, double-vanilla, custard that my great, grand-mother passed down to my Aunts and my Mother...I should quit my day job, it's richer than Rockefeller, King Solomon, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett...COMBINED, what a treat.

"contaminated ice cream." 2008-04-30
By Robert Davis (NJ)
I didn't pay attention to the advice from some of these reviewers who stated they had issues with metal filings in their ice cream from corroded parts, and now I'm regretting it! It's true. I went ahead and made my purchase for $150.00 with high hopes for this ice cream maker. I cleaned all the parts except for the hand crank itself when I first got it, and went ahead and attempted to make a batch of vanilla ice cream. The batch ended up getting pitched because I had noticed a black powder forming on the cannister lid and when I opened it, I discovered that the powder had gone into the ice cream. I took apart the entire hand crank to clean out the black powder and dried it well. My husband even fashioned a balloon contraption to cover the gap in the lid so nothing could go into the ice cream, but on my second batch it happened again and despite our efforts, the ice cream ended up being contaminated with the metal powder again. The hand crank parts are made of cast iron, and it has a bumpy texture and when it is cranked, and the gears turn they rub against each other causing the bumps on the metal to be scraped off into a fine powder, which then travels down the dasher into the cream. Also, after using it the first time I cleaned and dried all the parts as instructed, but when I went to assemble it for the second batch, I noticed that the dasher itself had rust spots already.I don't know why this company manufactures this product with such sensitive and impractical materials. I called the manufacturing co. and talked to customer service, and while they were very polite and wanting to make the situation better, their response to me was that they acknowledge this problem only happening with a very old machine or one that has been used too much....clearly this product isn't tested for quality assurance.Beware if you own or are thinking of owning this product! You may not have noticed any metal powder/filings in your ice cream, but wipe your finger around the lid of the cannister next time and inside the hand crank part to see if it comes out black. I am returning this machine for a refund and will look elsewhere for a hand crank machine.

"Updated version not better.... not even working after one use." 2010-07-01
By Tracy W. Ivory (New Hartford, NY)
We just bought this updated version Deni 5205 to replace our older model 5200, which we had for over 5 years. Used this new model once last night and after one use it stopped working. The motor gave out. Also this was much louder than our last model. Very disappointed.

"Wonderful soft-serve style ice cream" 2010-06-27
By Kimberly M
We've tried two different types of dessert in this ice cream maker. First we made a german chocolate ice cream with a recipe I got off of the allrecipes website. Soft serve is the best description and then it hardens up more in the freezer. Don't expect any ice cream to harden up more than soft serve. If you want hard scoop ice cream you will need to allow a couple of hours in the freezer for that. Very creamy with almost no ice crystals in it at all. We also made the espresso ice with the recipe from the instruction booklet that comes with the maker). It didn't freeze like you would think of an "ice". It was more of a slush. The machine locked up because of the ice that formed on the wall of the drum, which is what it is supposed to do to keep from breaking the paddle or burning up the motor. But, it left us scraping the ice off the sides and mixing it with the slush in the middle. It tasted fine, just wasn't an "ice". I would say if you are using this strictly for ice cream, it is a wonderful ice cream maker, but don't count on making other types of desserts. I love the top that it comes with so that you can just put the drum with the ice cream in it straight into the freezer to harden up. The design of the paddle mixes the ice cream up very well, one of the best I've seen. There are also lots of recipes that come with the instruction booklet, in case you are at a loss for what to make. I would also recommend Ben & Jerry's ice cream recipe book. Very good recipes.

"Lots of fun!!" 2010-03-01
By Indy Mom (Indianapolis)
I bought this ice-cream maker so I could enjoy some homemade sugar free ice-cream. I love how quickly and easily the machine works. You do have to freeze the finished product if you want it to be harder than soft serve. My daughters can even operate it to make their own which they love to do!!

"Deni Ice Cream Maker" 2010-01-19

This was a gift for my daughter, and she is enjoying it with her friends. It made a batch of ice cream very fast, with minimal noise. I'd recommend this to others.

"OK but not as good as my old Deni Scoop Factory" 2009-09-07
By C. M. Horace (San Francisco)
I bought the Deni ice cream maker with candy crusher (Model 5210) to replace my older Deni Ice Cream Factory machine. I've made ice cream now three times in this new one, and all three times the motor stops churning before the ice cream gets to the soft serve phase. It makes an uneven and inconsistent product that is more frozen to the sides of the cannister and bottom of the cannister, while the ice cream in the center is still very runny. The third time this happened, I took the cannister off the new machine and finished it off on my old one. The old one churned the ice cream to the perfect fluffy soft serve consistency, the new one is dense and runny, and freezes rock hard. I am disappointed the newer model isn't as good as my old one. The motor base is light weight, flimsy and all plasticized, while the older version (Model 5100) is a great little machine that is sturdy and solid. I expected more from the new model, thought it would be improved and even better. But sadly, it isn't. I would save my pennies and not purchase this one. At least the cannister and paddle fits my old one, now I have spare parts! The extra cannister will come in handy if I need a larger amount of ice cream. There's a Deni 5400 Scoop Factory now, and I think I should have bought that one instead.Deni Automatic Ice Cream Maker with Candy Crusher Attachment

The Rival Company Model# 8550-X 5-Qt. Deluxe Ice Cream Maker
5 QT, Wood Bucket Ice Cream Maker, Auto Shut Off When Ready, Includes Recipes, High Quality Wood Bucket.

Amazon.com Review

While this wooden ice cream maker looks old-fashioned, it's actually electric, taking the arm work out of the whole process. In just 20 to 40 minutes, the maker produces up to five quarts (approximately 40 servings) of ice cream, sorbet, or frozen yogurt. The high-torque motor shuts off automatically when freezing is complete. All that's required is rock salt, ice, and the desired mixture of any flavor (a recipe booklet is included). The Rival ice cream maker consists of the motor unit, a 10-by-11-1/2-inch wooden bucket, a metal ice cream can with plastic lid, a cork stopper for the hole in the lid, and a plastic dasher with a metal shaft. A latch system secures the motor unit to the bucket, and a 45-inch cord allows good reach to a power outlet.
To make good old vanilla ice cream, spiced cider sorbet, frozen strawberry yogurt, and many other tasty treats, the mixture is poured into the metal can, the dasher inserted, lid placed on, and motor unit engaged with the dasher shaft. The dasher does not turn during the freezing process; rather, the can turns around the dasher. Layers of ice and rock salt inside the wooden bucket around the can keep the temperature low enough to freeze the mixture. In case of leakage through the wooden bucket, it's a good idea to have newspaper or a plastic tub underneath. To harden ice cream, the dasher is removed after churning is complete, the cork stopper inserted into the lid, and ice and rock salt are packed over the entire can for a couple hours. All the parts except the motor unit should be washed and dried by hand. Rival covers the ice cream maker with a one-year warranty. --Ann Bieri

"Motor" 2010-02-18

It makes good ice cream but the motor is a little weak. We don't use it very often so I don't believe it should be warn out already...good buy for the price though.

"ice cream maker" 2009-12-23

I couldn't find any ice cream freezers in the store, so I checked around on the internet and founf one at Amazon with free shipping. Received it very quickly and it will be a gift for my son and his wife for Christmas. Thank you for the quick service and I will be ordering from you again.

"poor product" 2009-09-27

I have to agree with a number of other reviewers here. The wooden bucket leaks. The only way I could make ice cream at all was to put the whole thing in my kitchen sink & fill the sink with water. That way the brine had nowhere to leak to. The paddle shaft/motor interface is terrible. It started to strip the first time I used it. Yes, I had aluminum shavings in the ice cream, too. With very careful assembly, I was able to use it 3 more times--then I grew frustrated & threw it out. Your money is better spent on a quality ice cream maker.

"Frustrating machine" 2009-09-14
By John Sharp (Atlanta, GA United States)
After roughly 10 bouts with this ice cream maker, I tossed it in the trash this past weekend. The primary issue is the poor quality of the plastics in the join between the motor and the lid on the canister. After the very first use, the plastic on both began to grind down creating poor contact. By the fourth use, it was essentially useless.

"this ice cream maker sucks!" 2009-09-01
By Gerald Gutheil
With six little kids standing, watching this machine with anticipation and the beater in the machine not turning because of a design flaw is disappointing to say the least. Never the less we tried it again with the same results. Oh well I've been fished in before!

--Fred Brack

The White Mountain Experience
The White Mountain Experience started in the 1850s.
Founded in 1853, we’ve always been about making good times happen right at home with ice cream you make yourself. The experience starts with the discussion--often the kids get their pick--of what flavor ice cream your family wants to make. Vanilla with bittersweet chocolate chips or maybe peach made with orchard fresh peaches. Every delicious choice is limited only by your imagination. Just set up your White Mountain ice cream maker with ice and rock salt, and let the fun begin. Whether you’re cooling off a hot summer picnic or warming up a homebound winter weekend, the experience is one you can’t put a price on.
Our secret is the triple-motion dasher.
At the heart of the White Mountain ice cream maker is a uniquely designed, twin-blade "dasher." The outer canister turns clockwise and the blades turn both clockwise and counter clockwise. That triple-motion action continuously folds the ingredient mixture from the outer walls back onto itself creating the smoothest and creamiest down-home ice cream ever made.
